Programs:  Brian Herbert started his Ju Jitsu career in 1976 training with the brothers Roy & Ray Huggins, after starting in Karate, Brian saw a demonstration of Ju Jitsu, and felt that the Art would better suited, as there are more rounded skills than kicking, punching and take downs.

Brian started his first club in Corringham, East Essex in 1981 after receiving his 1st Dan, and due to his dedication and diligence the club built a dedicated and loyal following.

Brian's philosophy in Ju Jitsu is simple - because of the methods of training the sport is suitable for people of all ages, has no limits with regard to size and women and men train in the same techniques. Ju Jitsu caters for all , helps build self confidence and encourages friendship and cooperation.

Additional Info:  In October 1993 the same year we received an invitation from Sensei James Pape 6th Dan Ju Jitsu to attend a seminar at Wilmslow Sports Centre, with the 19th Grand Master of Japan, Soke FUMON TANAKA 7th Dan Ju Jitsu.

Both I and Sensei Lionel attended the seminar to which was an experience of its own to train and officially meet and exchange ideas with the Senior Chief Instructors from as far as Japan, an experience that we will never forget.

After all this was happening, we established contact with the local government and after a meeting with the Minister for Sports at the time the GSLP Political Party, Miss Marie Montegriffo, everything began to bounce back on us. No one was interested at the time in helping us out; to the eyes of the Government we were just another sports person adding problems to the Government at the time. No one could understand what we were trying to get through to all Departments concerned, which was our ambition in promoting this beautiful art of ours.

We could not convince the Government at this time, or the executive Sports Office Mr Joe Hernandez, Victoria Stadium Sports Manager, that we were an official local martial arts club, and had been practising and teaching Judo / Ju Jitsu for over twenty years, and that we were conducting Ju Jitsu classes at the Shotokai Karate Club, and at the Tae Kwon Do Club two days a week and that were therefore required our own premises, to further promote Ju Jitsu both locally and abroad. We tried to get into a Private Property, but the price was far too expensive for us to teach Ju Jitsu at a private building.

This was around 1995 and Sensei Lionel Garcia suffered a massive heart attack and passed away, a very sad loss at a critical time.

Again I was bouncing from one department to another, and I took full advantage of this, due to the amount of members we had, we were prepared to make an official demonstration in Main Street and at the entrance to the Governor’s Residence at The Convent, to show that we meant business.

At long last and after trying meetings were called by the Minister’s Office, Miss Marie Montegriffo, to meet at North Jumpers Bastion, we agreed to meet at 10 am and since then we were allocated our premises which is the Gibraltar Bushido Ju Jitsu Academy Headquarters, at No. 4 North Jumpers Bastion.

Programs:  This is the homepage for the Sony BMG Jujitsu club. This is where members can communicate easily and those interested in joining can have a look about. This page is still fairly new so we're putting new content up all the time.

Both the Jujitsu class, and Self-Defense class are held in the 6th Floor Boardroom and are FREE OF CHARGE. Jujitsu is on Tuesday's 6.30-8.30 and the Self Defense Class is Wednesday's 6.30-8.30.
Additional Info:  The Jujitsu Class usually follows our BJJAGB approved syllabus that takes you through the nine belts from red to black. We also learn techniques outside the set syllabus and vary the activities in class. This ensures a more rounded development of the students. The class currently has a mixture of red, white, yellow and orange belt students so there is opportunity to train at every level.

The Self Defense class, as the title suggests, focuses on the entirely functional elements of Jujitsu when used in personal defense. These will include escapes from various grabs and restraints, defense against strikes and learning numerous locks/restraints as defense. As you become more comfortable with the techniques, basic throws and takedowns will be included coupled with training in breakfall technique. Learning how to fall correctly to save injury, regain balance or essentially escape an attack forms an important part of a students knowledge.

Both classes cater for every level of fitness and those who attend regularly do see improvement in their physical performance so this can provide a healthy form of excercise too.

FAQ How much does this cost? Nothing. Though if you choose to purchase a Gi (training outfit) these are supplied at cost (under £30)

Looks a bit dangerous, am I going to get hurt? Although a contact sport, training takes places in a safe, controlled environment and every student's abilities are taken into account before engaging in each activity.

What should I wear? Initially, Gym gear is fine. Gi's are more robust as some techniques often include grabbing and controlling via someone's clothing.

I don't think I'm built to be able to throw anyone around or be able to overpower someone much larger than me, do I have to get much stronger before taking part?

No, the techniques shown rely on principles of leverage, shifting centres of balance, vunerable points and redirecting attacks safely away from yourself. (Video demostration to be added this week)

If unsure the best thing to do is either speak to somone who already attends, or drop by for a while and see how a lesson progresses.

Goshinkwai
Instructors:  Personal Profile - Alun Williams 5th Dan Having consistently trained and instructed within Martial Arts and Self-Defence systems for over 20 years, Alun offers vast experience within this field, having trained hundreds of students and helped coach numerous Dan grades. Trained predominantly in the Goshinkwai Ryu Yawara Renmei system, Alun was granted special dispensation to run his first club at only 2nd Kyu. At grade 2nd Dan, he was formerly invited to train under his most influential Instructor, Soke-Dai John Warfield. This furthered his progression and he attained 5th Dan in this system. Alun is now the Chief Instructor and founder of the Total Body Defence Goshinkwai organisation and has been received Internationally as a Martial Arts instructor with published articles in major Martial Arts magazines, as well as being featured in television programmes, radio and numerous newspaper media. Many of his students have progressed to run their own established classes and some have gone on to train some of the world’s most elite forces, as well as appearing on television and making the award winning Totalbodydefence DVD. Alun's professional approach to his training and running of the organisation has been reflected in the outstanding quality of his first Instructional DVD release, which received superb reviews and was awarded “DVD of the Year” at Seni2008.
Programs:  www.totalbodydefence.com
Additional Info:  Formed in 2006 by several established Instructors, TBD Goshinkwai is a voluntary run, non-profit self-defence organisation, with the aim of providing practical tuition to all levels of student, irrespective of race, age, gender and ability. The organisation strives to provide particularly high standards, within a safe, relaxed and informal environment. Instructors have run established classes mainly within the South Wales area for over 20 years and in addition monthly seminars (including women only) and short courses are also run to help develop students. The style is simply a method of ‘self defence’ based on yawara principles, incorporating: striking, kicks, grappling and footwork amongst others. We are forward thinking and open minded regarding training methods and systems and have recenetly incorporated Silat Suffian Bela Deri concepts and principles in order to add strength our weapons defence training. Students mainly train on mats in Gi’s, however casual wear and trainers are worn periodically to get students used to “normal wear” training. Training aids such as kick pads, training dummies, focus pads and gloves are also used within the classes to develop power, technique and fitness. Alun and his Team also offer the opportunity of providing tailored seminars throughout the UK at the convenience of your own club.
